Saltwater Plus Mechanical Load

Chloride attack proceeds continuously while the component carries thrust, torque or mooring load. Grade selection must handle both, which usually means stainless or duplex rather than coated carbon steel that fails wherever the coating is damaged.

Inspection Intervals in Years

A ship is inspected at drydocking, potentially years apart. Components must have no defect capable of growing critical in that window, which makes NDT and material soundness non-negotiable rather than advisable.

Why is duplex used for marine components?

Its ferrite phase resists chloride stress corrosion cracking that attacks austenitic grades, while roughly doubling yield strength so sections can be thinner and lighter.

Can carbon steel be used in marine service?

Only with reliable coating and in accessible locations for maintenance. Coatings fail wherever damaged, and marine corrosion then proceeds rapidly at that point.

What testing accompanies marine forgings?

Ultrasonic and magnetic particle inspection on critical parts, mechanical testing, and EN 10204 3.1 certification with third-party inspection where required.
