EN 10204: Material Test Certificate Types
EN 10204 defines what a material certificate is worth. The difference between a 2.2 and a 3.1 certificate is the difference between a general claim about the grade and measured results from the specific batch you received — and buyers pay for the wrong one constantly.
EN 10204 defines four material certificate types. Type 2.1 declares compliance with no data, 2.2 adds non-specific test results, 3.1 reports measured results from your actual batch validated by the maker's independent inspector, and 3.2 adds third-party validation.

The Four Types
Type 2.1 is a declaration of compliance with no test results. Type 2.2 adds test results, but from non-specific testing rather than your batch. Type 3.1 gives measured results on the delivered material, validated by the manufacturer's independent inspection function. Type 3.2 adds validation by an independent third party or the purchaser's inspector.

Which One You Need
For structural and general engineering, 2.2 is often adequate. For pressure equipment, safety-critical parts and most export orders, 3.1 is the practical minimum. Insist on 3.2 only where a code, a client or a regulator actually requires it, because it adds inspection cost and lead time.
What Independence Means in 3.1
The validating inspector must be independent of the manufacturing department — not an external body, but not the production manager either. A supplier whose 3.1 certificates are signed by the person who ran the job has not met the standard's intent.
