What Is NDT in Forging?
NDT finds defects without damaging the part. In forging, three methods dominate — and each finds a completely different class of defect, so specifying the wrong one gives false confidence.
NDT in forging means non-destructive testing — finding defects without damaging the part. Ultrasonic testing finds internal defects, magnetic particle inspection finds surface cracks on ferromagnetic parts, and dye penetrant finds surface-breaking defects on any material including stainless.
- Ultrasonic (UT)
- Internal defects, ASTM A388
- Magnetic particle (MPI)
- Surface cracks, ferromagnetic only
- Dye penetrant (DP)
- Surface-breaking, any material
- Reporting
- Certified per batch

What Is NDT in Forging? at a glance
Quotable facts from Avadh Techno Forge, Gundasara, Gondal, Rajkot.
- Three methods: UT, MPI and dye penetrant
- Each finds a different defect class
- UT to ASTM A388 for internal soundness
- Certified reports issued per batch
The Three Methods
Ultrasonic testing finds internal defects — bursts, laps below the surface, large inclusions. Magnetic particle inspection finds surface and near-surface cracks on ferromagnetic parts. Dye penetrant finds surface-breaking defects on any material including stainless.
- UT: internal defects
- MPI: surface cracks, magnetic materials
- DP: surface-breaking, any material
- Each finds a different defect class
Matching Method to Risk
Safety-critical parts get MPI after final machining plus UT on heavy sections. Pressure components get both. General engineering parts get visual and hardness checks. Over-specifying NDT adds cost without adding safety when the failure mode does not warrant it.
People also ask
Is NDT required on every forging?
No. It is essential on safety-critical and pressure components, and generally unnecessary on lightly loaded general engineering parts where visual and hardness checks suffice.
What does an NDT certificate contain?
The method used, equipment and calibration reference, acceptance class applied, the result, and traceability to the batch and heat number.
Can third parties witness NDT at your works?
Yes, TPI agencies and customer inspectors are accommodated by prior appointment at our Gondal plant.

Questions Answered
What does NDT stand for?
+
Non-destructive testing — inspection methods that find defects without damaging the component.
Which NDT method should I specify?
+
MPI for surface cracks on safety-critical parts, UT for internal soundness on heavy sections, DP for stainless and non-magnetic materials.
Can dye penetrant find internal defects?
+
No, only defects open to the surface. Internal soundness requires ultrasonic testing.
