Forging Quality Documents Explained
Quality documentation is often specified by copying a previous order, which produces either gaps or expensive redundancy. Here is what each document proves, so you can specify what your application genuinely requires.
A forging's standard document set comprises the material test certificate proving chemistry and properties, the heat treatment chart proving the thermal cycle, hardness and dimensional reports proving the results, and an NDT certificate where specified — all tied to the batch and heat number.

What Each One Proves
The material certificate proves what the steel is. The heat treatment chart proves what was done to it. The hardness report proves the treatment worked. The dimensional report proves the part matches the drawing. NDT proves it is internally and superficially sound. Each answers a different question, and skipping one leaves that question unanswered.
Specifying Sensibly
General engineering parts rarely need full NDT documentation. Pressure and safety-critical parts always do. Specifying the maximum set by default adds cost and lead time to every order, while specifying too little leaves you unable to prove anything if a failure occurs.
