Flash
Buyers often see flash as waste, and in one sense it is — you pay for that steel. But without it, forgings would routinely under-fill, so the real question is not how to eliminate flash but how to minimise it.
Flash is the thin excess metal squeezed out between die halves at the parting line during closed die forging. It is deliberate: back pressure from flash forces metal to fill the die cavity completely before escaping.

Why Flash Is Deliberate
As the dies close, metal reaches the parting line and begins escaping through a narrow gap. That restriction builds back pressure inside the cavity, which is what drives metal into thin ribs and sharp corners. Remove the restriction and those features under-fill.
Cost Impact
Flash typically adds 8–15% to billet weight on closed die work, and material is 40–60% of piece cost. Reducing flash through better die design and billet sizing therefore saves real money on every piece for the life of the tooling.
