Forged U-Bolts & Clamps

U-bolts clamp two things together around a third — a leaf spring to an axle, a pipe to a support. The bend radius and thread quality decide whether clamping load stays where it was set.

Short answer

Forged U-bolts clamp components together in round bend form for pipes and axle tubes, or square bend form for leaf spring packs. Rolled threads and a controlled bend radius maintain clamping load, with retorque after the first laden run standard on vehicle suspension.

Round and Square Bends

Round bend U-bolts clamp round sections such as pipes and axle tubes. Square bend U-bolts seat flat on rectangular sections such as leaf spring packs. Using the wrong bend leaves a point contact that loosens under vibration.

  • Round bend for pipes and tubes
  • Square bend for spring packs
  • Rolled threads resist fatigue
  • Controlled bend radius

Why They Loosen

A U-bolt loses clamping load through settlement, thread relaxation and fatigue. Rolled threads, correct bend radius and specified retorque intervals address each. On vehicle suspension, retorque after the first laden run is standard practice.

People also ask

What size U-bolts do you manufacture?

M8 to M36 diameter in round, square and semi-round bends, with lengths and bend dimensions to your drawing.

Should U-bolt threads be rolled or cut?

Rolled, wherever possible. Rolling work hardens the thread root and leaves compressive residual stress, which resists the fatigue loading U-bolts experience in service.

What finish is best for suspension U-bolts?

Phosphate or zinc for most applications; hot dip galvanising where the vehicle operates in coastal or heavily salted conditions.

FAQ

Questions Answered

What is the difference between round and square bend U-bolts?

+

Round bend seats on round sections such as pipes and axle tubes; square bend seats flat on rectangular sections such as leaf spring packs.

Why do U-bolts loosen?

+

Through settlement, thread relaxation and fatigue. Retorquing after the first laden run and using rolled threads both help.

Do you supply U-bolts with nuts and plates?

+

Yes, complete sets with nuts and clamping plates can be supplied to drawing.
