How to Prepare a Forging RFQ
Most forging enquiries arrive missing something that materially affects price, which triggers a round of questions and delays the quote by days. Six pieces of information prevent almost all of that.
A forging RFQ needs six things to be quoted accurately: the drawing or sample, material grade or property target, batch and annual quantity, any applicable specification, the scope of supply wanted, and the delivery expectation. With all six, a quotation typically follows within two working days.
- Minimum information
- Drawing, grade, quantity, scope
- Quotation time
- 2 working days when complete
- Annual quantity
- Determines die amortisation
- Specifications
- State upfront, not after
- Scope
- Blank, machined or fully tested
- Sample lead time
- 3 – 5 weeks with new die

The Six Things That Determine Price
The drawing or sample; the material grade or property target; quantity per batch and per year; any specification or standard the part must meet; the scope you want (forged blank, machined, tested); and the delivery expectation. Missing any one produces either a delay or a caveated quotation.
- Drawing or physical sample
- Grade or property requirement
- Batch and annual quantity
- Applicable specifications
- Scope of supply
- Delivery expectation
Why Annual Quantity Changes the Price
Die cost is amortised across the order. A quote for 500 pieces and a quote for 20,000 differ substantially in per-piece price for exactly this reason. Stating annual volume — even approximately — lets a supplier price the tooling sensibly rather than defensively.
What Causes Price Revisions Later
Tolerances discovered to be unachievable, a specification revealed after quotation, NDT requirements added late, or a scope change from blank to finished part. Stating all of it upfront costs nothing and prevents the revision conversation entirely.

Questions Answered
What information does a forging supplier need to quote?
+
Drawing or sample, material grade or property target, batch and annual quantity, applicable specifications, the scope of supply you want, and your delivery expectation.
Why does the supplier ask for annual quantity?
+
Die cost is amortised across the order, so per-piece price depends heavily on volume.
Can you quote from a sample without a drawing?

How fast do you quote?
+
Within two working days when the enquiry is complete.
