Seamless Rolled vs Welded Rings
A welded ring has a joint; a rolled ring does not. Under rotating hoop stress that single structural difference determines where a crack will start, which is why rotating rings are specified seamless almost without exception.
A seamless rolled ring has continuous circumferential grain flow and no weld, while a welded ring carries a heat-affected zone and residual stress at a discrete location that becomes the crack initiation site under rotating hoop stress. Rotating applications should always specify seamless.

The Weld Is the Weak Point
A weld introduces a heat-affected zone with altered grain structure, residual stress and possible defects, at one discrete location. Under rotating bending and hoop stress, that location becomes the crack initiation site — reliably and predictably.

Circumferential Grain Flow
Ring rolling draws grain into a continuous circumferential loop, exactly the orientation hoop stress demands. A ring rolled from plate and welded has the plate's rolling direction, which is not aligned with hoop stress anywhere around the circumference.
Cost and When Welded Is Acceptable
Welded rings are cheaper for one-off large diameters and for static, lightly loaded applications — spacers, guards, non-structural rings. For bearing races, gear rims and slew rings, the saving is false economy.
