How to Tell a Forging by Eye
Look for a parting line running around the part where flash was trimmed, generous fillet radii rather than sharp internal corners, and draft angle on vertical surfaces. Castings show a rougher grainy surface and often a gate mark; machined parts show tool marks and can have sharp internal corners a die could never form.
When a Part Must Be Forged
Where failure risks life or where fatigue governs design: steering, braking, suspension, lifting, pressure boundaries and rotating drivetrain components. Standards across those sectors mandate forged construction for exactly this reason.
