Flash Land
Get the flash land right and the cavity fills at reasonable die load. Get it wrong and you either under-fill the part or destroy the die prematurely — with no middle ground.
The flash land is the narrow, controlled-thickness gap around the die cavity through which flash escapes. Its thickness and width set the back pressure inside the cavity, making it one of the most consequential dimensions in the whole die.

Thickness Controls Everything
A thinner land restricts flow harder, raising back pressure and filling detail better — but also raising die stress and accelerating wear. A thicker land reduces die load but risks the cavity under-filling. Every die design balances these two failure modes.
The Gutter Beyond It
Past the flash land sits the gutter, a relief cavity that simply accommodates excess metal without adding further restriction. The land does the work; the gutter provides somewhere for the flash to go.
