Forging vs Investment Casting

Investment casting produces geometry forging cannot approach, at tolerances close to machining. What it cannot produce is directional grain flow or a guarantee of internal soundness — and for loaded parts that is the whole argument.

Geometric Freedom Against Grain Flow

Investment casting forms internal passages, undercuts, thin intricate walls and fine detail that no die can produce. Forging cannot match that, but casting has randomly oriented grain and possible micro-shrinkage, so fatigue performance is fundamentally lower.

Tolerances and Finish

Investment casting holds roughly ±0.1 to ±0.3 mm with excellent surface finish, often removing machining entirely. Hot forging is looser, so a machining envelope must be planned into the design.

Cost, Volume and Lead Time

Investment casting tooling is cheaper than forging dies and lead times are shorter, favouring low to medium volumes and complex parts. At higher volumes with simpler geometry, forging's faster cycle and better properties reverse the comparison.
