SAE 1045 Forgings

SAE 1045 is the international counterpart to EN8 and one of the most widely forged steels on earth. It offers a strength-to-cost ratio that no alloy grade approaches for general-duty components.

A Global Standard Grade

Because 1045 and its equivalents C45, S45C and EN8 are recognised everywhere, export customers can specify it without translation risk. Availability in India is excellent and pricing is stable.

  • Recognised worldwide as 1045 / C45 / S45C
  • Excellent availability in India
  • Stable, predictable pricing
  • Well-documented properties

Properties and Treatment

Normalised, it gives 570–700 MPa tensile at 180–230 BHN. Induction hardening lifts wear surfaces to 55 HRC while the body stays tough and machinable.

Applications

Shafts, hubs, axles, pins, spindles, couplings, rollers, machinery brackets and low-to-medium stress forged parts of every description.

People also ask

Is SAE 1045 the same as EN8?

They are close equivalents — both medium carbon unalloyed steels — with minor differences in specified composition ranges.

What hardness does induction hardening give on 1045?

Up to 55 HRC on the surface, with case depth set by the induction cycle and the core left tough.

FAQ

Questions Answered

Is SAE 1045 the same as EN8?

+

They are close equivalents — both medium carbon unalloyed steels — with minor differences in specified ranges.

Can 1045 be welded?

+

With preheat and controlled cooling, yes, but its carbon content makes it less weld-friendly than low carbon grades.

What hardness after induction hardening?

+

Up to 55 HRC on the surface, with case depth set by the induction cycle.

Is 1045 suitable for gears?

+

For lightly loaded gears with induction-hardened teeth, yes. Loaded transmission gears should use a carburising grade.
