Edging

Together fullering and edging determine whether the blocker receives a workpiece with metal roughly where it is needed, or one the blocker must fight to redistribute.

Short answer

Edging gathers metal into regions of the workpiece that will need a heavier section in the finished part. It is the complement to fullering: where fullering pushes metal away, edging accumulates it.

Building Up Heavy Sections

Where a part has a boss, a flange or a heavy end, metal must be concentrated there before the cavity closes. Edging drives material into those regions, so the blocker and finisher are shaping metal that is already approximately in position.

Why Both Operations Exist

Fullering and edging are usually applied together on the same workpiece — thinning where the part is thin, gathering where it is heavy. Neither alone handles a part with strongly varying section.

FAQ

Questions Answered

What is edging in forging?

+

An operation that gathers metal into regions requiring heavier sections, preparing the workpiece for blocking.

How does edging differ from fullering?

+

Edging accumulates metal where sections are heavy; fullering thins sections and pushes metal lengthwise.

Are both always needed?

+

Only on parts with strongly varying section. Uniform parts often go straight to blocking.
